Tainan City is located in southwestern Taiwan, to the south of Chiayi County, and to the north of Kaohsiung City. On December 25, 2010, the former Provincial Tainan City merged with Tainan County so as to upgrade into a special municipality, which covers an area of 2,192 square kilometers, and has a population of more than 1.87 million. Tainan represents the beginning of Taiwan’s modern history. It was established as the capital in 1624 during the colonial Dutch rule in Taiwan, through Zheng’s Regime, and afterwards under the rule of Qing Dynasty until 1887. So in total, Tainan remained the capital of Taiwan for 264 years. Tainan has been historically regarded as Taiwan’s cultural capital for its many national historic sites, various festivals with local characteristics, Taijiang National Park, Southwest Coast National Scenic Area, and Siraya National Scenic Area, etc. Also, Tainan has rich landscapes, landforms, reservoirs, ponds, lagoons, farms, museums, temples, historic buildings, and other tourism resources. Moreover, Tainan has the most diverse resources and is the most habitable Lohas City of Taiwan.
